Unknown Odessa - places of interest
In Odessa there are a lot of attractions about which guides and travel agencies know nothing, these routes do not appear in travel directories and brochures, and about which it is sometimes difficult to find information in archives.
Here, for example, only a few people know that Odessa has its own Eiffel Tower. Meanwhile, it is a smaller version of the symbol of the French capital (its height - 15 meters of the original - 300.65 m) adorns the factory of drilling machines at Bugaevskaya Street for half a century. A copy of this tower appeared in the late 1950s. The director of the plant was with the Soviet delegation in Paris, where he saw the Eiffel Tower and said that his workers can make something better. After his arrival to Odessa, he instructed the welding shop to make a copy.
Another unusual monument, or rather fountain was installed several years ago in the courtyard through a narrow alley (16th Fontanaya). This is the world's only Statue of Carlson, a literary fairy tale hero. The pedestal is made of a chimney from which the hero of Astrid Lindgren tales takes off. The monument was created by Odessa`s sculptor Mikhail Reva and was commissioned by the Odessa's businessman.
In general, Odessa businessmen love to decorate their establishments with something special, for example, the owner of a private beach of Luzanovka established in 2002, full height figures of the mother elephant and baby elephant made from plaster. Local citizens argue that the sculptures are in honor of the elephant who lives in Odessa`s zoo, the only Zoo in Ukraine where Indian elephants can breed.
A well-known pub placed on Deribasovskaya Street the "monument to beer", it is a barrel with a glass wall under it sticking out. And one of the shops of cell communication used a bench where they nailed down a phone and a laptop.
Arts and Crafts in our survey are represented by creatures that have been made from motorcycle parts and more than one year the residents of Tairova Street can enjoy these figures. And also the Knight, weightlifter with a barbell and a soldier with a grenade launcher.
You can find many wonders in the historic part of city. The only monument in the world to the chair near the city garden is situated in the smallest area of the earth, named after Ostap Bender. Bender is also dedicated on the plaque at the house of Ekaterinenskaya Street, in front of the building of Control Security Service of Ukraine. It reports that here Ostap Bender, the literary hero of Ilf and Petrov, worked as a superintendent from March 31, 1931 to April 1, 1932.
On the roof of the 150-year old house on the opposite corner from the Philharmonic, an iron cat is hiding, which pulled off a bunch of frankfurters somewhere and now is looking for a place to eat them. On the blank wall of the old courtyard of Pushkinskaya Street a "window on Europe" is painted as a symbol of European integration of Ukraine into the European Union.
